Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement
Pipe Bursting in San Diego, CA
When a sewer line is too broken, cracked or deteriorated to be lined, it usually has to be replaced. Solid Plumbing & Drains offers pipe bursting across San Diego County, 24 hours, seven days a week. With this trenchless method, a new sewer pipe goes into the path of the old one without opening a trench along the whole run. We start with a free on-site evaluation and a sewer line camera inspection, so you know whether bursting is the right fit before any work begins.

Pipe Bursting for Failing Sewer Lines in San Diego
Pipe bursting replaces an old sewer line by pulling a new pipe through it. A cone-shaped bursting head is attached to the front of the new pipe and drawn through the existing line from one access point to the other. As the head moves forward, it breaks the old pipe apart and pushes the fragments outward into the surrounding soil, while the new pipe follows directly behind it and takes the old line’s place.
The work is usually done from two small access pits, one at each end of the section being replaced. Sometimes an extra opening is needed where a branch line or connection has to be reattached. Everything between the pits stays in the ground, so lawns, driveways, walkways and landscaping along most of the line’s path can usually stay as they are.

Bursting, Lining or Dig-and-Replace: Which Is the Right Call?
There is no single best trenchless method. The right one depends on what the camera shows, and we walk through the options with every customer.
Sewer pipe lining fits a pipe that is damaged but still mostly holds its shape: cracks, small separations, leaking joints, or root entry that can be cleared. A new liner is installed inside the existing pipe and cured in place, usually through a cleanout or a small access point. It needs the least digging of the three, though the liner slightly reduces the inside diameter of the pipe.
Pipe bursting fits a line that is too far gone to line but still runs along a usable path, such as badly broken, crushed or partially collapsed sections of brittle clay or cast iron pipe. Because a whole new pipe goes in, you are not relying on the old pipe at all. It does need access pits at each end, and it follows the old pipe’s route, so it is not the fix for a line that needs rerouting.
Dig-and-replace is still the right answer in some situations: a short damaged section that is easy to reach, a line with a serious sag where the slope has to be corrected, a pipe that must be rerouted, or a line crowded by other utilities. See our sewer repair and replacement service for those cases.
We will not push one method over another. Once we have inspected the line, we explain what we found and why one option fits your pipe better than the others.
Not Sure If Your Sewer Line Needs Replacement?
Sewer lines often give warning signs before they fail completely. If the same problems keep coming back after the line has been cleared, or a camera has already shown broken or collapsed pipe, it may be time to look at replacement rather than another cleaning.
Signs Pipe Bursting May Be an Option
Sewer backups that keep returning after the line is cleared
Camera footage showing broken, crushed or collapsed pipe
An older clay or cast iron sewer line with widespread cracking
Heavy root intrusion that has broken the pipe apart
A line that was assessed for lining but did not qualify
Soggy ground, sinking soil or sewer odors along the line
What to Expect From Our Pipe Bursting Service
We keep the process clear from the first call to the finished line, and we explain each step before any work begins.
Tell Us What Is Happening
Describe the backups, odors, slow drains or past repairs, and we will schedule a time to come out.
Free On-Site Evaluation
We run a sewer line camera inspection to see the condition of the pipe, locate the damage and check the line’s route and depth.
Choose the Right Repair
We explain whether pipe bursting, sewer lining or a conventional repair is the best fit for your line, and what the work involves.
Complete the Approved Work
If pipe bursting is the right solution, we open the access points, pull the new pipe through, reconnect the line and backfill the access pits.

I had solid plumbing & drains come out to make some repairs on the drains for both my toilets and replaced my outdated laundry box that was not working. The techs Emmanuel and Mario were so professional, fast, and knew exactly what the problem was. They even went the extra mile and hooked up my washer and dryer once they finished the repairs. Everything works perfectly now. Solid service, fair pricing, and real attention to detail. I’d highly recommend them.

I had some landscape drain problems. Had one of the TV big company over and they essentially said they needed to bust up my concrete patio etc etc and they would not touch a lateral drain. Got in touch with Mario and had a great conversation with him on the problem. He came over with his crew Emanuel and Angel. Mario diagnosed the issue and created a plan of attack. The main drain line was full of roots but he got them and the issue if FIXED. They were pleasant to deal with, very professional and did a great job. I will definitely go back to them for any further inside or outside plumbing problem! Thank you Mario!

Solid Company & Drains Representatives reported as scheduled and came with an attitude of getting the job done. They secured their ladder, hopped up in the attic and within 5 minutes Mario had determined the problem. He took pictures of the area and sent them to me on my phone. He explained each photo. Incredible! Additionally, he suggested that I get a specialty company to use special tools to determine if there is additional water damage in the wall area that they could not see. I really appreciated that suggestion. Thanks to Mario and Angel for their professionalism, friendly attitude, and great plumbing skills!

Emmanuel and Angelo are the best team! They showed up at my house in El Cajon within 30 minutes of calling. We had been dealing with this issue for almost a year, and they were the first ones to actually figure it out. They ran a camera down the drain, found the clog right away, cut out the damaged pipe, and replaced everything properly. Great pricing, super professional, and easy to work with. Highly recommend Solid Plumbing & Drains!

What San Diego Property Owners Ask About Pipe Bursting
What is pipe bursting?
Pipe bursting is a trenchless way to replace a sewer line. A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, breaking it outward into the soil, while a new pipe is pulled in behind it to take its place.
Does pipe bursting require digging?
Some, but far less than a conventional replacement. The work is usually done from an access pit at each end of the section being replaced, plus any openings needed to reconnect branch lines. The ground between the pits stays in place.
What is the difference between pipe bursting and pipe lining?
Lining rebuilds the existing pipe from the inside and needs the old pipe to still hold its shape. Pipe bursting breaks up the old pipe and replaces it with a new one, so it can work on lines that are too damaged to line.
Is pipe bursting right for every sewer line?
No. Lines with a serious sag, lines that need to be rerouted, and lines that run very close to other utilities or a foundation may be better served by lining or a conventional repair. A camera inspection of your line tells us which option fits.
How do I find out if my sewer line qualifies?
Schedule a free on-site evaluation. We inspect the line with a camera, explain what we find and recommend pipe bursting, lining or another repair based on the actual condition of the pipe.
